From 1926 to 1930 he was General Director of the ÖBB .

Life

After studying mining at the Leoben University of Mining and Mining , he took on various positions in the Styrian heavy industry. In 1905 he took over all shares in the Alpenländische Sensenwerke in Judenburg from Karl Wittgenstein , after having been the company's operations director for several years.

From 1912 to 1919 Foest-Monshoff was mayor of the city of Judenburg and at the same time a member of the Styrian state parliament . Since he had made a contribution to the food supply in Upper Styria during the war years, he was appointed head of the State Institute for Purchasing and Economics in 1918. In 1923 he became director of the Austrian Federal Railways , responsible for procurement, and from December 1926 to March 1930 he was the company's general director.

During his tenure, ÖBB embezzled public funds as part of a "secret fund". Foest-Monshoff and his predecessor as General Director (who took office in 1923), Josef Maschat (born September 20, 1874 in Vienna, † June 9, 1943 in Munich ), were convicted and had to make repayments. The appointment of his successor led to a government crisis and the overthrow of Chancellor Johann Schober .

Rudolf Foest was married to Natalie Perko Edler von Monshoff († 1969; age: 100). The marriage had the children Alfred († 1954; age: 58) and Annie (from February 10, 1915: Annie Wolff von Wolffenberg). He died at the II. Surgical University Clinic in Vienna , headed by Wolfgang Denk , and was buried as Rudolf Foest on August 26, 1936 in the Döblinger Friedhof (group 24, row 5, number 9).
