Rudolf Emil Albert Havenstein (born March 10, 1857 in Meseritz , Province of Posen , † November 20, 1923 in Berlin ) was a German lawyer and President of the Reichsbank .

origin

His parents were Robert Havenstein (1825–1905), district court director in Stargard / Pomerania and a member of the Prussian House of Representatives, and his wife Bertha Braut (1829–1872), daughter of the grammar school director in Brandenburg Friedrich Wilhelm Braut (1793–1863) and Albertine Pfitzer .

Life

Rudolf Havenstein came from a civil servant family and studied law in Heidelberg and Berlin. After completing his studies, Havenstein worked in the Prussian judicial service from 1876 , starting his career as a judge in 1887 until he moved to the Prussian Ministry of Finance in 1890.

Havenstein held the office of President of the Royal Maritime Trade from 1900 to 1908 . He was then President of the Reichsbank until 1923 . During his tenure, the Reichsbanknotes were declared legal tender. Havenstein's signature is therefore printed on the German Reichsbanknotes from 1908 to 1923. It was during his tenure that the 1923 hyperinflation occurred .

Havenstein reintroduced the issue of loan notes and was also instrumental in introducing war bonds at the beginning of the First World War .

Rudolf Havenstein is buried in the Dahlem cemetery.

On October 10, 1889, he married Maria von Meyer (1866–1929), the daughter of the MP Wilhelm von Meyer .
