Rudolf Klaudus (born October 19, 1895 in Nebersdorf , Burgenland, Kingdom of Hungary, † March 26, 1979 in Eisenstadt ) was an Austrian painter, educator and publicist.

Life

Rudolf Klaudus grew up in a Croatian farming family in Burgenland . He attended the graphic teaching and research institute in Vienna and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb .

Klaudus began working as a secondary school teacher in Deutschkreutz in 1926 and soon formed an artist group with Alfred Pahr and Franz Erntl as a counter-position to Albert Kollmann and Franz Elek-Eiweck. He became a member of the Burgenland Art Association, where he regularly participated in their exhibitions. He also wrote articles for the Croatian newspaper Hrvatske Novine and participated in the creation of Croatian school books.

Klaudus joined the Patriotic Front in 1933 and in 1936 took over the function of press chief and propaganda leader of the front militia . Also in 1936 Klaudus was appointed school inspector for the Croatian school system in Burgenland. As part of the connection of Austria by Nazi Germany Klaudus was from the Nazis in protective custody taken. He was dismissed from the school service as a teacher and he was banned from painting.

After the war in 1945, Klaudus was reinstated as a school inspector, initially for the Oberpullendorf district , and again for the Croatian school system in Burgenland from 1950. From 1947 and 1949 he was editor of the magazine Naše selo (Our Village). From 1953 he worked for the youth newspaper Mladost (The Youth).

As a painter, Klaudus was heavily involved. He re-founded the Burgenland Art Association, which was broken up by the National Socialists, and in 1955 took over the chairmanship in succession to Albert Kollmann. The collective exhibition of the Kunstverein in 1954 in the Orangery in Eisenstadt was connected with a contentious conflict. The art association remained in a crisis, which is why Klaudus soon resigned as chairman. Klaudus and Rudolf Kedl , Karl Prantl , Wolfgang Bambinger and Feri Zotter went from Eisenstadt to Vienna, where they founded the artist group Burgenland in 1956 , which initially exhibited in Vienna, and from 1959 again in Burgenland.

Klaudus took part in the Rabnitz Painting Weeks for many years .
