Rudolf Kučera

Rudolf Kučera (born April 10, 1947 in Prague ; † January 15, 2019 there ) was a Czech political scientist .

Life

Rudolf Kučera studied philosophy and history and from 1970 worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Philosophy and Sociology of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences . In 1978 he was fired for his work on Charter 77 and had to work as a construction worker for several years in the 1980s. During this time he organized housing seminars and founded the Bohemia and Moravia Section of the Paneuropean Union , of which he was president for many years. At the same time he was the founder and editor-in-chief of the magazine Střední Evropa (Central Europe), which appeared in Samizdat from 1984 . From 1989 he was allowed to devote himself again to research and teaching and in 1990 he held the Chair of Political Science at the newly founded Faculty of Social Sciences at Charles University in Prague . There he founded the political science course and completed his habilitation in 1991 as the first political scientist in Czechoslovakia. From 1993 to 2012 he was director of the Institute for Political Studies at Charles University in Prague.

From 2001 to 2004 Kučera supervised the CSU politician Andreas Scheuer in his written work for the minor doctorate . The quality of Scheuer's thesis, which was positively assessed by Kučera, was criticized in the media.

From 2006 onwards, Kučera also gave lectures at the University of Ústí nad Labem , where he helped set up the political philosophy course. At the philosophy faculty of this university he was a member of the scientific council and deputy head of the chair for political science and philosophy. In the last years of his life he also taught at the CEVRO Institute in Prague at the Chair of Political Science and International Relations.

He also worked as a consultant for the two conservative parties KDU-ČSL and US-DEU . Kučera was close to the Sudeten German Landsmannschaft and advocated a revision of the Beneš decrees . He was a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Center against Expulsions Foundation .

  • 2009: Knight's Cross for the Hungarian Order of Merit for his work in research and teaching.
  • 2007: Prize of the Dean of the Philosophical Faculty of the Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem for his contribution to the development and presentation of the Faculty
