Rudolf "Rudi" Sailer (born July 15, 1944 in Kitzbühel , Tyrol ) is a former Austrian ski racer . He started in the Ski World Cup from 1967 to 1971 and took part in the 1970 World Cup.

biography

Rudi Sailer is the younger brother of Rosi Sailer and the famous Toni Sailer . Like his siblings, he also started skiing at an early age and was Austrian junior champion in giant slalom in 1963. In 1965 he was accepted into the national team of the Austrian Ski Association . In the same year he won his first FIS race, the giant slalom in La Toussuire , and in 1964 he was third in the giant slalom in Innsbruck . He achieved another victory in 1967 in the downhill from Saalbach-Hinterglemm .

The Tyrolean scored his first points in the World Cup on March 19, 1967 in the giant slalom in Vail . In the following season he achieved three top ten places on the slopes of Wengen , Chamonix and Aspen . At the Olympic Games in 1968 , however, he was only a substitute runner and was not used.

In the winter of 1968/69 Sailer finished five times in the top ten and achieved his best World Cup result on February 14th with third place in the downhill from Val Gardena . He finished seventh in the Downhill World Cup. In the 1969/70 season , Sailer only made it into the points once, but was able to qualify for the 1970 World Cup in Val Gardena. There he reached seventh place in the downhill on the Saslong . In the same year he became Austrian runner-up in the downhill. In the following winter , he could not drive into the points in any World Cup races. Due to a serious injury, he finally had to end his career.

Sailer took over the plumbing and glazing business from his father and has been running the “Rote Teufel” ski school in Kitzbühel since 1985. His second sporting passion was golf , he achieved some successes at national and European level.
