Rudolf Schmid (architect)

Rudolf Schmid (born October 1, 1868 in Freiburg im Breisgau ; † March 21, 1947 there ) was a German architect .

Schmid studied at the Technical University of Karlsruhe . During his studies in 1890 he became a member of the Germania Karlsruhe fraternity .

About three dozen works by Schmid of various kinds are known. For example the machine house, the water tower and the company logo of the Gütermann company in Gutach im Breisgau , the hall of the hotel and the spa in St. Blasien , as well as several department stores and commercial buildings in Lörrach and Freiburg.

Schmid also built many residential buildings, especially villas , in Freiburg with his brother and contractor Emil Schmid z. B. that of Professor Jonas Cohn . The city of Freiburg commissioned him with the redesign of the theater in the former Augustinian monastery into today's Augustinermuseum , for which he submitted facade designs and room planning. However, the First World War prevented construction. Despite the war, however, his design for the art gallery of the Kunstverein Freiburg on Friedrichring was realized.

Schmid's traditional architecture has a dominant role in Freiburg and influenced architects such as Karl Gruber , Carl Anton Meckel and Joseph Schlippe .
