Rudolf Stummer Ritter von Traunfels (born November 13, 1866 in Vienna ; † August 2, 1961 ) was an Austrian zoologist who was mainly active in the field of polycladida (an order of strudel worms ) and myzostomida (parasitic annelid worms ).

life and work

Rudolf Stummer von Traunfels was born on November 13, 1866 as the son of the railway engineer Rudolf Stummer von Traunfels sen. (Son of the ennobled client and architect Josef Mauritius Ritter Stummer von Traunfels ) born in Vienna. From 1888 to 1890 he studied zoology at the University of Vienna , then for a year at the University of Munich . At that time he also worked for a few months at the zoological station in Trieste and at the biological station on Heligoland . In 1892 he received his doctorate in Vienna with the dissertation topic "Comparative studies on the mouthparts of the Thysanuren and Collembolen ". After completing his studies, he accepted an assistant position at the Zoological-Comparative-Anatomical Institute of the University of Vienna, followed by a position at the Zoological-Zootomic Institute of the University of Graz .

His research in the field of polyclades , in continuation of the work of Prof. Ludwig von Graff , led him to a one and a half year research trip to Inner Asia, more precisely to the Tianshan and Pamirs , accompanied by his friend György Ede Almásy Graf von Zsadány and Törökszentmiklós , des Father of Ladislaus Almásy . After viewing and researching the collected material, he continued his assistantship in Graz in 1903. In the course of the International Zoological Congress in Bern in 1904, he was awarded the Golden Medal of Emperor Nicholas II of Russia. In the same year he completed his habilitation and was appointed associate professor five years later .

He was also awarded the Great Silver Linnaeus Medal by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences . Stummer von Traunfels was also a member of the Leopold. Carol. Deutsche Akademie Der Naturforscher (since 1906) and holder of other international awards.

Rudolf Stummer Ritter von Traunfels died at the age of 95 on August 2, 1961, his final resting place is in Kranzlhofen near Velden , Carinthia .
