Josef Mauritius Stummer , from 1866 Stummer von Traunfels (born March 18, 1808 in Korneuburg , Lower Austria ; † February 12, 1891 in Vienna ) was an Austrian civil engineer and architect .

Life

He was born as the son of master mason Matthias Stummer (* 1778, † 1837 in Korneuburg), first mentioned in a document in 1808 . After graduating from the humanistic Schottengymnasium in Vienna, he studied under Peter von Nobile at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts from 1829 to 1831 . In 1831, Stummer became an assistant at the chair of Professor Jan Evangelista Purkyně at the Vienna Polytechnic , where he was appointed full professor of architecture and construction accounting in 1836 (from another source: 1835/36 as professor of agriculture and hydraulic engineering).

He endeavored to develop larger public buildings, such as the design of the Viennese bank district or the central post office building in Vienna's Dominican district or the tobacco factory in Schwaz , but achieved great recognition in the redesign of the Vienna North Station and as the architect of the Emperor Ferdinand's Northern Railway from Vienna to Brno .

Stummer was also successful as an author, in particular he completed two works in 1862: a graphic representation of the structure of the Austrian educational institutions and a historiographic representation of the history of the Kaiser-Ferdinand-Nordbahn. In 1867 he published a book with the title “Practical Guide to Tracing the Railways” and in 1874 founded the specialist journal “Stummer's Engineer. International organ for the entire field of technical knowledge and repertory of the most outstanding foreign specialist journals ”.

In 1867, at his own request, he was given permanent retirement with regard to his teaching post so that he could devote himself entirely to the railway system.

Josef Stummer von Traunfels is the father of the railway engineer Josef Stummer von Traunfels jr. (* 1839, † 1893) and grandfather of the zoologist Rudolf Stummer von Traunfels, who was born on November 13, 1866 .

His brother was Carl Ritter von Stummer-Traunfels , who ran the K. ka priv. First Viennese guano factory in Vienna .

Awards

In 1855 he received the "Medal for Art and Science" in gold and a first class medal at the World Exhibition in Paris . He received the first class medal at the London World's Fair in 1862 for depicting the history of the Northern Railway . In 1865 he was decorated with the Order of the Iron Crown 3rd Class, he was also awarded by Pope Pius IX. awarded the Order of Gregorius and also from the State of Prussia with medals. On March 1, 1866, he was raised to the Austrian knighthood in Vienna with the addition of "von Traunfels" .

He was a member of several scientific associations and Vice President of the Board of Directors of the Austrian Art Association. He was a member of the Stephansturm Committee and President of the Northern Railway Company (1849), Vice President of the Karl Ludwig Railway and a member of the Board of Directors of the Carinthian Railway .

In 1892 the Traunfelsgasse in Vienna- Brigittenau (20th district) and the Stummergasse in 1940 in Vienna- Donaustadt (22nd district) were named after him.
