Life
Rudolf Zeitler's father Eugen Zeitler (1880–1922) was an engineer, he died with his wife Elsa Kühn (1884–1922) in a mountain accident in Berchtesgaden . Zeitler then grew up with his two younger siblings with his Jewish grandfather, Chief Medical Officer Moritz Kühn, in Kaiserslautern , where he continued attending grammar school. The grandfather was disenfranchised during the Nazi era and deported to Camp de Gurs in 1940, his aunt was murdered in Auschwitz . In 1930 Rudolf Zeitler began studying history and art history in Munich, Marburg and Berlin. After the transfer of power to the National Socialists in 1933, he had to flee to Czechoslovakia , where he could continue his studies. In 1936 he received his doctorate with Victor Ehrenberg in Prague with a dissertation on Sophocles . In 1937, faced with the Sudeten crisis , he fled to Sweden on a scholarship.
He found work as a teacher at a grammar school in Uppsala and in Gregor Paulsson a mentor at Uppsala University , where he received his doctorate on Renaissance medals. Zeitler joined the emigre organization Free German League of Culture . In 1946 he published a monograph on Albrecht Dürer . In 1947 he married the historian Hannelore Günthert (1919-), they had two children. He completed his habilitation in Uppsala in 1954 with a thesis on “Classicism and Utopia”, was appointed private lecturer and in 1964 professor. He translated Paulsson's work “Die Soziale Dimension der Kunst” (The Social Dimension of Art) into German (1955) and with Reclam's art guides he brought Scandinavian art closer to German readers . Between 1965 and 1977 he published the art historical, scientific journal Figura . Zeitler worked on the "neoclassical" of the 19th century and wrote the volume on the 19th century for Propylaea Art History in 1966 .
