Rudolf Zimmermann (born September 8, 1878 in Rochlitz , † August 28, 1943 in Dresden ) was a German publisher and photographer who specialized in animal photography.

Life

He was the son of the administrator of the Friedrich-August-Tower, built in 1860 on the Rochlitzer Berg , on which and its immediate surroundings he spent a carefree childhood. From here he had to walk down through the forest to the Rochlitz elementary school for about an hour, which aroused his interest in nature and its fauna at an early stage.

After graduating from school, he went to the lawyer Dr. Kirsten in Rochlitz and then worked for an insurance company in Leipzig . In 1902 he became a freelance writer, nature photographer and local historian and in the following year he founded his own publishing house, in which he initially published his own monthly for collectors of minerals, rocks and petrefacts. In his later work he concentrated primarily on animal photography. He took many suggestions for this from the standard work With Blitzlicht und Büchse by Carl Georg Schillings , published in 1905 . As a photographer, he used only one type of camera, namely the Ica SLR camera in 9 × 12 cm format , manufactured by the International Camera Actiengesellschaft (ICA) in Dresden . Later he made his own assessment: my most tried and tested camera is also my oldest.

In 1922 he was a co-founder of the Association of Saxon Ornithologists , whose magazine he created and edited as editor.

In 1940 he moved to Lake Neusiedl to take up the species population there from the adjacent salt steppe area. A sore throat forced him to hospitalize in Dresden-Friedrichstadt in August 1943 , where he died.

Honors

A street in Rochlitz was named after him. Honors and appreciations of his work as an animal photographer were also regularly held there.
