Stephanie and Ruedi Baumann

1963 to 1965 he completed an agricultural apprenticeship. In order to be able to continue his education as an engineer agronomist at the ETH , he made up his Matura at the evening high school . From 1973 Ruedi Baumann worked in the Agriculture Directorate of the Canton of Bern . After his father's death in 1975, he took over the Inselmatt farm in Suberg as a sideline. In 1979 and 1980 the two sons Simon and Kilian were born. In 1983 he quit his position as secretary of the Agriculture Directorate to become a full-time farmer.

Baumann's parents had to wait a long time for them to take over their farm. In order not to repeat this, the Baumann couple handed their business in Suberg over to their son Kilian early on - at the end of their political career. Since they saw no possibility of buying a suitable farm in Switzerland, they emigrated to France .

Ruedi Baumann is married to Stephanie Baumann , also a Swiss politician and member of the Social Democratic Party .

Political offices

1982 Ruedi Baumann was as a part-time council elected by Grossaffoltern. In 1986 Baumann was elected to the Grand Council for the Free List and his wife Stephanie for the Social Democratic Party . In 1991 he was elected to the National Council . Stephanie Baumann also moved to a vacant seat on the National Council in 1994. Both were re-elected in the 1995 and 1999 elections and were the first couple in the National Council.

When Hanspeter Thür , then President of the Swiss Greens, resigned in 1997, Baumann was elected as his successor in a competitive election. After his resignation in 2001, a co-presidency with Ruth Genner and Patrice Mugny took over the leadership of the party.

Baumann exerted a significant influence on Swiss agricultural policy . Two so-called small-scale farmers - initiatives and three referendums fell into his active time as a politician.
