The lower impoundment-regulated Ruhr (Ru) (unofficially also known as Ruhrschifffahrtskanal or Ruhrkanal ) is a federal waterway in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and connects the Rhine-Ruhr port in Mülheim an der Ruhr on the one hand with a length of 12.21 km directly with the Rhine and on the other hand via the connecting canal to the Ruhr and the Rhine-Herne Canal with the Duisburg-Ruhrorter ports and with the Rhine . As an inland waterway, the Ruhr is divided into the waterway classes Vb from the mouth to the connecting canal, Va up to above the north bridge Mülheim and I up to above the castle bridge Mülheim. The kilometers go uphill, starting at the confluence with the Rhine. Responsibility lies with the Duisburg-Meiderich Waterways and Shipping Office . The actual, non-navigable "Old Ruhr" separates itself from the shipping canal at Styrum Castle in Mülheim and flows back together with it north of the Kaiserberg .

history

The Ruhr under the bridge landscape

So-called "Ruhraaken" transported the coal from the Mülheim collieries to Duisburg from the 17th century. At that time the Ruhr was the most important transport route for coal. In 1780 the Ruhr was navigable as far as Langschede . From 1847 the railroad took over more and more transports, so that the Ruhr shipping became less important and was discontinued in 1889. To increase its economic power, the city of Mülheim decided to build a port and create a direct connection to the port of Duisburg. For this purpose, the Ruhr was partially given a new bed between the ports (puncture: Raffelberg lock canal), as the original Ruhr route was unsuitable for the large Rhine ships. The construction time was twelve years. The difference in height of around ten meters between the cities was compensated for by the construction of the Raffelberg weir / Ruhrschleuse Raffelberg and Ruhr weir Duisburg / Ruhrschleuse Duisburg . The waterway was opened in 1927. The head of the first barrage is so great that it is used to generate energy in the Raffelberg hydropower plant . The Ruhrwehr Duisburg was replaced by a new building in 1957.

The Duisburg barrage with the Ruhrschleuse and the Ruhrwehr and the Rhine-Ruhr port are part of the route of industrial culture .
