Rupert Graf Strachwitz

Rupert Graf Strachwitz (born April 30, 1947 in Lucerne ) is a political scientist and historian. He is voluntary and full-time, practical, advisory, researching and teaching in the field of civil society and foundations.

Life

The son of the German diplomat Rudolf Graf Strachwitz and the English writer Barbara Greene grew up in Mendoza (Argentina) , Rome and Berchtesgaden . He studied political science , history and art history in the USA ( Colgate University ) and in Munich until 1974. His master's thesis dealt with the ' Levellers ', a civil society revolutionary group in England in the 17th century. After seven years of employment in the Order of Malta abroad and Malteser Auxiliary Service in Germany, he was President of the Administration of the Duke of Bavaria from 1980 to 1987 and at the same time honorary manager at the Maltese Aid Service as well as a member of various bodies of the German Caritas Association , most recently from 1984 to 1985 as Vice President.

In 1987 he began advising foundations and other non-profit organizations. In 1989 he founded Maecenata Management GmbH, Munich, as a specialized service and consulting company for this area. Since 1997 he has been director of the Maecenata Institute for Philanthropy and Civil Society, since 2010 on the board of the Maecenata Foundation.He has published many articles on civil society , civic engagement , religion and civil society, philanthropy , foundations and European topics.

He was a founding member and, from 1994 to 1997, Chairman of Euconsult, a European association of consultants in the non-profit sector. From 1995 to 2000 he was chairman of the German advisory board of the Johns Hopkins Comparative Nonprofit Sector Project, from 1999 to 2002 a member of the study commission ' Future of Citizenship Engagement ' of the German Bundestag, from 2000 to 2007 a member of the foundation board of the Fondazione Cariplo, Milan, from 1992 to 2011 member of the council of Europa Nostra , the European cultural heritage association, and from 1999 to 2009 member of the board of the Theodor Heuss Foundation .

He is a member of boards of trustees and boards of trustees in Germany and abroad. He participates in two committees of the German Cultural Council , is deputy chairman of the German-British Society in Berlin, was chairman of the Federal Expert Committee on Culture of the FDP and honorary chairman of the Friends of Andechs Monastery.

He is deputy chairman of the advisory board appointed by ADAC in March 2014 to accompany its reform process.

Strachwitz lives in Berlin.
