Ruth Hall (born December 29, 1910 in Jacksonville , Florida , † October 9, 2003 in Glendale , California ; actually Ruth Gloria Blasco Ibáñez ) was an American film actress .

Life

Hall, a niece of the writer Vicente Blasco Ibáñez , moved with her mother to Tampa after their parents divorced . In 1930 Henry King shot the drama Hell Habor there , in which Hall received a tiny role that marked the beginning of her acting career. Sometime later, Hall was offered a two-year actress contract by Paramount , after which Ruth Hall moved to California with her mother in 1931. Hall initially stood in front of the camera in extras and minor supporting roles in B-movies , before she appeared in a larger role for the first time in The Marx Brothers at Sea .

She starred in a number of westerns starring John Wayne and Ken Maynard , including Ride Him, Cowboy and Dynamite Ranch . These films were made on such a tight budget that the actors had to do their own makeup and hairstyle. During the filming of Ride Him, Cowboy , which took place in the Mojave Desert , Hall suffered such severe sunburn that the later scenes in the film only showed her from behind so that the injuries were not visible on the screen. In 1932 she was voted one of the WAMPAS Baby Stars of the Year.

In 1933 Hall married cinematographer Lee Garmes . The marriage lasted until his death in 1978. A year later, the couple went to New York and then to England, as Garmes had been hired by Alexander Korda for some projects . Hall previously starred alongside Buster Crabbe in Badge of Honor (1934) and in The Old Gray Mayor (1935) alongside Bob Hope .

Shortly before the outbreak of World War II , Hall and Garmes returned to the United States. The couple bought an avocado farm in Laguna . Ruth Hall, now the mother of two daughters, had not renewed her contract with Paramount and also turned down offers from Warner Bros. and MGM . During the 1940s and 1950s she appeared only sporadically in smaller roles before giving up acting entirely.
