Award

She received the Prix Courage in 1998 because, as a school caretaker and mother , she fought for years to get justice done to schoolgirls who were sexually abused by a teacher . She had to assert herself against the inaction of the authorities and the hostility of the villagers of Möriken and the teaching staff. The case got in the national press and on Swiss television and is taken up again and again in the press when the occasion arises.

background

In 1990, her daughter, who had just started school, told her about sexual violations of boundaries by her teacher Köbi F. When she found out that the teacher had taken two students to bed at the class camp and petted them, she informed the school administration committee, including the school doctor and the school doctor President of the District Court. When this became known, the teachers demanded their resignation from the school administration and they are asked to avoid the school house area. The accused Köbi F. is recognized by the school authorities and all concerns about his behavior in class are irrelevant. He was unanimously re-elected as a teacher and continued to head the lower school ski camp. In 1995 he quit his job without giving any reason. After further accusations of other children in 1997 and despite a criminal complaint, the school authorities continued to stand behind Köbi F. In 2002 he was sentenced in the last instance to 3¼ years in prison and a five-year professional ban for sexual assault and sexual acts with children.

Ruth Ramstein believes that the case inspired Urs Odermatt to write his play The Evil Uncle and the film of the same name . Urs Odermatt denies this, points to the archetypal character of the case and points out that every village and every small town is familiar with such and similar cases of abuse.
