The wicked uncle (French: Le vilain tonton , eng. The Wicked Uncle , Italian: Il cattivo zio ) is a Swiss low-budget feature film from 2011 . Directed by Urs Odermatt , who also wrote the book based on his play of the same name.

action

The single mother Trix Brunner moved from the city to the countryside years ago so that her daughter Saskia can grow up in an intact and healthy environment. When Trix Brunner accuses the sports teacher Armin of having sexually molested her daughter, the whole village is outraged by the mother who claims this. Armin is popular, enjoys a high reputation as a former national champion in diving and the unrestricted solidarity of the village. Trix Brunner takes up the fight against everyone and is punished with contempt. Now and then she meets Koniecka, a reporter for the Schnellen Zeitung . Trix Brunner and Koniecka have a long friendship from the time of the student movement. In the end, Trix sets the school supervisory building on fire, suffering severe burns. Armin is sentenced to 3.5 years in prison.

background

The independent film was shot digitally on the Red One in 50 days at 85 locations in the canton of Aargau and in Hesse. The budget was over CHF 4 million. Only 68,000 francs were financed, since no funding and no broadcaster wanted to support the artistic radicalism of the project. The cast, crew and service provider worked with 100% provision, so initially waived payment.

The film had its world premiere at the 45th Hof Film Festival in 2011. Previously there were protests by actors and employees involved against Odermatt's production company Nordwest Film AG, as they had not received any employment contracts and therefore the image rights for a performance were not available.

The plot is reminiscent of the real "Möriken case" . Victims' representatives are of the opinion that the case inspired Urs Odermatt to write his play The Bad Uncle and the film of the same name. Urs Odermatt denies this, points to the archetypal character of the case and points out that every village and every small town is familiar with such and similar cases of abuse.

Reviews

“It's fun because Odermatt opens up a wide gap between the formal-stylistic gimmicks that seem so easy and the difficult subject they portray. And this is where the film ultimately fails - because what initially fascinates in terms of creative power cannot increase in the further course, but then the fate of those affected in the film takes over. Conclusion: A frenzied, multi-layered, brilliant, turbulent, grotesquely funny film about sexual abuse and silence - which in its imaginative collage-like form is far ahead of its somewhat outdated topic. " (Harald Mühlbeyer, cinefacts )

"A new Swiss film plays down pedophilia." ( The Swiss Observer )

“The Bad Uncle is without a doubt one of the most daring film projects in contemporary cinema in German-speaking Switzerland. [...] pure pleasure, because you experience what is also possible in the cinema off the beaten track: a poetic, hypnotic, then again irritatingly crude, but extremely cool noise of images with a certain trash factor, which is also another Story told. " (Stefan Volk, Filmdienst )

“The Bad Uncle is a disturbing film that you won't forget anytime soon, it is headstrong, edgy and raw in the best sense of the word, it consistently shouts out uncomfortable questions, and in any case stimulates discussion. What more can a film do? " (Stephan Langer, Kino-Zeit )

Awards

  • In 2012, The Bad Uncle won the New Vision Award for the most innovative film in the International Competition of the 11th Rome Independent Film Festival .
