About this picture

Ryanggang-do is a province in North Korea . It was created in 1954 by splitting off from Hamgyŏng-namdo Province . The capital of the province is Hyesan .

geography

The province borders in the north on the People's Republic of China , in the east on the province Hamgyŏng-pukto , in the south on the province Hamgyŏng-namdo and in the west on the province Chagang-do .

history

On September 9, 2004, the first major detonation occurred in the Ryanggang-do region, which was interpreted as an indication of a nuclear weapon test , which the North Korean government denies. Organizations outside North Korea located further tremors that indicate nuclear weapons tests in 2013 and 2016 in an area northeast of the village of Sungjibaegam in Ryanggang-do. The government of the People's Republic issued a press release in the last case confirming a nuclear weapon test.
