Ryne Dee Sandberg (nickname: Ryno ) (born September 18, 1959 in Spokane , Washington ) is a retired American baseball player who was active in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1981 to 1997 . He played his first game on September 2, 1981 for the Philadelphia Phillies . Although he only played 13 games with the Phillies before he moved to the Chicago Cubs in 1982 . He ended his career in the jersey of the Cubs and the number 23 is no longer awarded by the Chicago Cubs. His nephew Jared Sandberg also played in the MLB.

In 2005, Ryne Sandberg was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame .
