Sándor Járay (* 1845 in Timisoara as Alexander Jeitteles ; † 1916 ) was an art furniture manufacturer and head of a decoration atelier in Vienna .

biography

Sándor Járay founded his studio in 1868 with simple means , and within a short time he managed to get larger orders. In 1869 he was called in to restore and redesign the auditorium at the Theater an der Wien . Further orders were the interior fittings of the Hotel Austria , the third coffee house in the Vienna Prater and Schwender's Colosseum , the furnishing of the theaters and redout halls in Temesvár and Warasdin . This all contributed to the further development of the studio. Nevertheless, a critical time came for the young company. Some of the large establishments, such as the Hotel Austria, the third coffee house, the joint stock company of the Temesvár theaters and Redoutensäle, suffered shipwreck, which was associated with great losses for Sándor Járay. Also at the world exhibition of 1873 in Vienna, in which it participated excellently, ended with material failure. However, he managed to overcome the severe economic crisis and soon business picked up again.

In 1874, the studio was entrusted with the execution of the court salons in Bad Ischl station, and soon afterwards the establishment of part of the imperial hunting lodge in Lainz . The orders for the interior furnishing of numerous rooms of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, the auditorium and the courtyard ubicationen of the new kk Hof- Burgtheater and others came. He succeeded in gaining a firm foothold abroad with his products and expanding and consolidating it through his business trips to Germany , Russia , the Balkans and America. The “Metternich Salon”, which was exposed in the theater and music exhibition in Vienna, was sold to America, where it was imitated as exemplary for many years.

He received further government contracts for the restoration of the halls of the kuk finance ministry , the renovation and adaptation work of the Carl and Josefstädter theaters , the refurbishment of the kk Hofoper and the ceremonial halls in the new wing of the Hofburg . At the jubilee industrial exhibition in 1880, Emperor Franz Joseph I bought a chapel, an altar and two prayer chairs, which were later installed in Mayerling .

Járay still had countless private assignments. In his establishment at Griesgasse 12 in the 5th district of Vienna Margareten , all of the home furnishings were carried out. According to their own designs, the objects were made by carpenters , sculptors , wallpaperers , modellers , ciseleurs , painters and gilders , depending on their type .

Some of his works were carried out by Friedrich Goldscheider at the Vienna Manufactory . A rendering of the Josef Kainz monument from 1911 in glazed ceramic , which depicts this as Hamlet , should be emphasized .

He has received numerous awards for his achievements in the art industry. Among the most important were the award of the Knight's Cross of the Franz Joseph Order , the award of the title of kuk court and chamber supplier , and the award of the chamber title of Archduke Otto . There were also other top prizes and diplomas from many exhibitions.

His nephew Sándor Járay jun. (1870–1943) was also an artist.
