Entrance to the theater

The theater in der Josefstadt in Vienna's 8th district , Josefstadt , is the oldest existing theater in Vienna. It is with grants from the public by a private entity out.

history

The theater was founded in 1788, making it the oldest theater in Vienna that is still in use. Along with the theater in the Leopoldstadt and the theater on the Wieden, it belonged to the Viennese suburban theaters . Colloquially it is also referred to as the Josefstadt . (The suburb of the same name was incorporated into Vienna in 1850.)

The history of the theater is connected with big names: Ludwig van Beethoven and Richard Wagner conducted here, Johann Nestroy and Ferdinand Raimund were connected to "the Josefstadt" as actors and poets of the old Viennese Volkstheater , Johann Strauss (father) played in the Strüßels halls of the House.

In 1814 Ferdinand Raimund made his Vienna debut as Franz Moor in Friedrich Schiller's drama Die Räuber at the Theater in der Josefstadt .

In 1822, after the theater, which had become too small, was demolished and completely rebuilt by Joseph Kornhäusel, the house with the overture The Consecration of the House , composed by Ludwig van Beethoven , was reopened under his direction.

The young Wilhelm Reuling worked as Kapellmeister at the theater from 1828 to 1829 and premiered his first musical theater works here.

In 1829 Johann Nestroy made his debut here (after engagements at the Court Opera, in Amsterdam and in Graz) as an actor and playwright with The Banishment from the Magic Kingdom or Thirty Years from the Life of a Rag .

In the years from 1820 to 1840, a number of Italian and French operas (by Meyerbeer , Gaetano Donizetti and Vincenzo Bellini, among others ) were premiered for Vienna in Josefstadt and at times the house competed with the Hofoper am Kärntnertor .

On January 13, 1834, the romantic opera Das Nachtlager in Granada was premiered by Conradin Kreutzer , who was Kapellmeister of the theater from 1833 to 1836.

Ferdinand Raimund's play Der Verschwender with the poet in the role of Valentin (and with the incidental music by Conradin Kreutzer) was premiered on February 20, 1834 . Kreutzer's “romantic magic opera” Melusina based on a libretto by Franz Grillparzer (premiered in Berlin in 1833 ) was performed for the first time in Vienna in 1835 in “der Josefstadt”. In the same year, Eduard von Bauernfeld's only contribution to the Volkstheater, Fortunat , was premiered here.

From November 1834 to March 1835 Karl von Holtei was at the kk priv. Theater in the Josephsstadt, where his works The Wandering Singer and Laurel Tree and Begging Stick were performed.

On January 14th, 1847, Ludwig Döbler presented moving pictures in the theater for the first time in Vienna with the help of the so-called Laterna magica , an invention of the Tyrolean mathematician and natural scientist Simon Stampfer .

From around 1840 to 1860 the famous dancers Fanny Elssler and Pepita de Oliva , a Spaniard, performed in the theater.

On December 17, 1907, the operetta Die Försterchristl by Georg Jarno , brother of the theater director Josef Jarno at the time , was premiered with his wife Johanna Niese in the leading role.

The German-language premiere of Franz Molnar's suburban legend Liliom with Josef Jarno in the title role on February 28, 1913 was the basis for the worldwide success of the play, which is played again and again today.

In 1923, Camillo Castiglioni financed the acquisition and renovation of the theater in Josefstadt (Strusselsäle, including the hotel next to it) by the last Imperial and Royal Viennese court architect Gustav Orglmeister for Max Reinhardt . The opening of the house in the Reinhardt management took place on April 1st, 1924. Reinhardt was the driving force behind the Salzburg Festival and at the same time ran a theater in Berlin. He therefore soon installed sub-directors in “Josefstadt”, including Otto Preminger . After Hitler came to power in Germany in 1933, he concentrated on his activities in Austria for two years, but from 1935 onwards he prepared his 1937 relocation to the USA.

During the Second World War, the Vienna theaters were closed in August 1944. In April 1945, the Soviet occupying power attached great importance to getting the cultural scene going again very quickly. City Councilor for Culture Viktor Matejka made a major contribution to the resumption of four Viennese theaters on May 1, 1945, one of them the theater in der Josefstadt. Here the play Der Hofrat Geiger by Martin Costa was resumed, for the first time under the citation of the correct author, who was banned from practicing during the Nazi era.

In 1948 and 1949, two feature films were made in a specially set up film studio. Rudolf Steinboeck staged The Other Life in 1948 and Dear Friend in 1949 . Current stars of the theater such as Vilma Degischer could be seen in both films .

From 1946 to 1950 the ensemble used the “Little House” in Liliengasse as a studio stage. In 1949 the Kammerspiele opened as the theater's boulevard stage.

In the 1950s and 1960s the theater (with other well-known Viennese theaters) took part in the so-called Brecht boycott .

From 1990 to the end of 2000, the Rabenhof Theater was used as the second side stage .

On September 1, 2016, the premiere of Ödön von Horváth's early work , Nobody , found in the same year, took place in the theater under the direction of Herbert Föttinger .

During the summer break of 2017, the wooden stage floor (including the turntable) was renewed. The black pines for this come from the Hinterbrühl federal forest district .
