Johanna Jarno-Niese , better known as Hansi Niese (born November 10, 1875 in Vienna ; † April 4, 1934 there ) was an Austrian actress and operetta singer (soprano). The initial self-taught woman became one of the monarchy's most popular actresses .

Life

Born probably under the name "Marie Johanna" as the daughter of the German paper manufacturer August Niese († July 31, 1913 St. Andrä-Wrogen ). In 1880, when she was five, Hansi Niese's parents moved with her to Speising (part of Vienna's 13th district since 1892 ), to the house at Speisinger Strasse 28. The family lived there until 1892 (memorial plaque).

Hansi Niese made his debut at the age of 16 in 1891 in the South Moravian town of Znojmo at the local theater . Her series of successes in Vienna began in 1893 at the Raimund Theater , where she subsequently appeared in the role of soubrette for six years . In 1899 she moved to the Theater in der Josefstadt . A little later she married Josef Jarno , the director of this theater. With him she had two children, Josef (November 10, 1899 - February 17, 1964) and Hansi (February 26, 1901 - March 21, 1933, married Breza).

Not only on the various stages in Vienna, but also on tours to Berlin , Niese played in numerous pieces by Ludwig Anzengruber , Gerhart Hauptmann , Ferenc Molnár , Johann Nestroy , Ferdinand Raimund and Arthur Schnitzler, among others . She also appeared in various antics and in operettas (around 1907 as " Försterchristl " in the operetta of the same name by her brother-in-law Georg Jarno ) and often as a partner of Alexander Girardi .

In the thirties , Hansi Niese starred in a number of films, including 1931 in “ Die große Liebe ” and 1932 in “Husarenliebe”. Hansi Niese died while being transported to the Löw Sanatorium in Vienna. The popular actress was buried in the honorary grave (group 14 C, number 4) in Vienna's central cemetery, in which her husband Josef Jarno had been buried two years earlier. In 1935 in Vienna in the 19th district, Döbling , the Hansi-Niese-Gasse and in 1955 in the 13th district, Hietzing , not far from her childhood home, the Hansi-Niese-Weg was named after her. In 1952, the Hansi Niese monument, designed by Josef Müllner, was unveiled next to the Volkstheater in Vienna. (Müller previously designed, among other things, the Karl Lueger monument in Vienna .)
