Léon de Saint-Lubin

Napoléon Antoine Eugène Léon de Saint-Lubin (born July 5, 1805 in Turin , † February 13, 1850 in Berlin ) was a violinist and composer of Italian origin.

Life

Saint-Lubin was born in Turin as the son of a French language teacher, but was already four years old when he came to Hamburg , where he received his first violin lessons and lessons on the harp . From 1814 to 1817 Giovanni Battista Polledro (1781-1853), a pupil of Pugnani , gave him violin lessons in Dresden. In 1817 he appeared in Berlin and Dresden and in 1818 went to Frankfurt am Main , where he became a student of Louis Spohr . In 1820 he finally settled in Vienna and found great recognition there.

Beethoven dedicated a small solo piece, a cadenza , to Saint-Lubin after Saint-Lubin played a violin solo by Beethoven when the Josephstadt Theater reopened on October 3, 1822. The autograph was later owned by the Austrian National Library under the signature Sm 3154, but was lost in the Second World War . It bears the work number Hess 296.

In 1823 Saint-Lubin became concertmaster at the Josephstädter Theater, in 1824 Kapellmeister. Later he lived for a long time as a music teacher in Hungary , including a year on the estate of Count L. Festetics. Here he sought to perfect himself as a virtuoso , following the example of Paganini . In 1830 he was appointed concertmaster at the Königsstädtische Theater in Berlin. He stayed in this position until 1847. In his house he organized concerts and quartet meetings where the most famous virtuosos such as Spohr , Liszt , Servais and Mendelssohn could be heard. In addition to virtuoso violin pieces, Saint-Lubin also wrote songs that were acknowledged by Robert Schumann , violin duos, piano trios, string quartets, string quintets and an octet for winds and strings.

After years of sickness, he died in Berlin on February 13, 1850.
