The Đồng Nai ( Sông Đồng Nai ) is the second most important river in southern Vietnam after the Mekong . It rises in the central highlands , flows through the southeast region and flows into the South China Sea at Ho Chi Minh City east of the Mekong Delta . With a length of 586 km, it is - based only on the course within the national territory - the longest river in the country before the Red River . It is dammed several times by hydropower plants and thus plays an important role for energy generation as well as for the water supply in Vietnam.

The river is created in the center of the province of Lâm Đồng , near the Pongour waterfalls , through the confluence of the source rivers Đạ Đưng (also Đa Dâng ) and Đa Nhim . Both have their source further north in the area around Đà Lạt , with the Đạ Đưng running west and the Đa Nhim running east of the city.

In the further course, the Đồng Nai forms the border to the provinces Đắk Nông and Bình Phước , after which it flows through the province Đồng Nai named after it . In sections it also forms the border of the Cát Tiên National Park . It is dammed in its northern section three times and this creates the dam Ho Tà Đùng , and one more time in the south, where he the reservoir to Ho Trị forms.

In its lower reaches, the Đồng Nai runs along the border with the province of Bình Dương , before it - greatly broadened - reaches the city of Biên Hòa and thus the metropolitan area of Ho Chi Minh City. Several large bridges cross the river here (Cầu Hóa An, Cầu Ghềnh, Cầu Bửu Hòa, Cầu Đồng Nai, Cầu Long Thành). The first bridge at this point, a design by Gustave Eiffel , was built between 1901 and 1904 during French colonial rule ; it collapsed after a collision in March 2016.

After Biên Hòa, the Đồng Nai runs east of Ho Chi Minh City, before the Saigon River flows into it south of the core city . From this point on he is called Sông Nhà Bè . Almost 10 river kilometers further south, the river divides into two estuary arms: the Soài Rạp (Soirap) in the west and the Lòng Tàu (or Lòng Tảo ) in the east. The latter splits even further and forms, together with the neighboring river Thị Vải , the mangrove swamp area Cần Giờ (Rừng Sác) . The rest of the western arm Sông Soài Rạp represents the border to the provinces Long An and Tiền Giang . Shortly before its confluence with the South China Sea, the Cần Giuộc and the Vaico merge into it. The former French coastal fortress Rạch Cát is located at this point on the western bank .

There are three larger port facilities on Đồng Nai / Nhà Bè: The Dong Nai Port in the Long Bình Tân district of Biên Hòa, the Cát Lái port just before the confluence of the Saigon River, and the new Hiệp Phước port on Soài Rạp in the delta. The Soài Rạp is to be further dredged in order to enable heavy cargo ships to access the Hiệp-Phước port in the future.

Due to the high industrial concentration in the region and the lack of sewage treatment plants, the lower reaches are considered to be heavily polluted.
