The Sønderhaver Forest consists of the two large forest areas Kelstrup Fredksov and Hosnap Skov as well as several smaller areas and is located near the Danish municipality of Sønderhav on the Flensburg Fjord (Danish: Flensborg Fjord ). Most of the 250 hectares of forest are state owned. They come under the jurisdiction of the Danish state forest district of Gråsten .

history

Autumnal impression in the Sonderhaver forest.

The forests in Denmark that occur today on the Flensburg Fjord are remnants of the large forest areas that covered the entire part of the country in the earliest times. After extensive clearing in the late Middle Ages, among other things to use the wood as an energy supplier and building material, the large forest areas were largely destroyed and what remained are the small parcels known today. The nobility and church began to secure shares in the forest in order to protect it from complete destruction. The Danish king, in turn, passed a law in 1241 that allowed farmers to use the forest for the general public. In this way, the areas were secured as forests in the long term, but nature found it difficult to recover and develop. The farmers continued to fell massive trees and let their pets graze in the forest; as a result, small plants and seeds were eaten. In 1770, a land consolidation law was passed by the Danish state, which provided for the afforestation and fencing of the forest areas. Use as pasture was prohibited and logging was limited. Sønderhaver Forest has been state-owned since 1850 and the areas belonging to it are protected.

Management

A forester and a group of forest workers are responsible for the management. These are employed by the Danish state.

Harvesters are also used for thinning in Sønderhaver Forest.

description

The Springdom seen from the hiking trail.

In the mixed forests around Sonderhav you will find beech and oak as the main tree species, as well as maple and also spruce , silver fir and occasional Scots pine . At almost 40 m above sea level, the highest point of the forest areas is reached, from where the terrain slopes sharply towards the Flensburg Fjord. Several streams flow, including the Skelbaek , one of the cleanest in Jutland . Wildlife includes deer , hares and foxes , but also badgers and shelduck . The Springdom is one of three ponds in the Sonderhav area that carries carp and is located in Hosnap Skov. Monks are said to have brought it to Denmark around 1550 . In the forest area there are also around 30 round olms and dolmens that have been placed under nature protection.

Recreation room

The forest areas have a well-developed and well-developed network of trails. Some of the forest paths have been repaired with a new layer of gravel and are handicapped accessible.

The old oak

In the eastern half of the Kelstrup Fredskov is the so-called Old Oak , the age of which is estimated to be around 300 years. It was badly damaged in a storm in 1967, and many old beech trees in the forest fell victim to the force of nature.
