SMS Schwalbe was a Jäger class ship , a class of fifteen steam cannon boats, 2nd class, of the Royal Prussian Navy , the Navy of the North German Confederation and the Imperial Navy .

Construction and service time

The Schwalbe , which was ordered from the A. E. Nüscke shipyard in Szczecin in mid-1859 , was launched on February 14, 1860. Only with the beginning of the German-Danish War was the ship officially put into service on March 1, 1864, although it had already been transferred to the base of the gunboats on Dänholm in 1860 . The Schwalbe was used in the II Flotilla Division, but did not come into combat contact with Danish ships. After the end of the war, the gunboat was taken out of service and mothballed on Dänholm.

The outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War brought the swallow to its second and final service . It was put into service on July 24, 1870 and three days later began the march through the Eider Canal into the North Sea , where it was used in the outpost service on the Jade . The gunboat in Geestemünde was decommissioned on October 5, 1870 .

Whereabouts

Due to the poor technical condition determined by the Kaiserliche Werft Wilhelmshaven , the Schwalbe was removed from the list of warships on March 19, 1872. The ship then served for several years as mines barge and was eventually scrapped.
