The Saarpfalz-Gymnasium in Homburg is a grammar school in the Saarpfalz district .

history

The school was founded in 1873 as a private Latin school and is the oldest secondary school in the city. In 1925 it was moved to its present location.

building

The building was built as a district hospital before 1918, converted into a school in 1925 and expanded four times.

Today it consists of:

  • the old building with the rectorate, the secretariat, the map room, the student library and some classrooms
  • the first expansion with classrooms and a drawing room
  • the second extension with a gym, sports hall and music hall
  • the third extension with the function rooms for biology, chemistry and physics, language laboratory, computer rooms and the auditorium
  • the pavilion (fourth extension) with two computer rooms and four classrooms.
  • the new building (fifth extension) with the cafeteria, four large rooms for afternoon care, two modern classrooms and a multimedia learning workshop.

classes

In the Saarpfalz-Gymnasium approx. 70 teachers teach a total of approx. 770 students from lower to upper grades (as of August 2017)

The school offers a variety of working groups, including the school medical service, the “Tai Chi” and nature detectives group, the SongPopGospel choir (under the direction of Tanja Stegentritt), the school band (under the direction of Peter Hecker), the Brass band (led by Felix Pohl), the school library, the basketball club, the performance-oriented soccer training (led by Pascal Völkle), the mediation group and the theater club. The latter was able to convince many times in front of the sold-out school auditorium with pieces such as arsenic and lace bonnets and Krabat .

In the summer of 2010 a new school newspaper was created with the name “SPG in pocket”. The previous school newspaper "Fr @ gezeichen" was discontinued in 2005.

Sports can be taught in the Waldstadion Homburg , as it is only about 300 meters from the school.

The Saarpfalz-Gymnasium is one of four pilot schools in the Saarland that offer a computer science branch. In this branch, computer science is taught as the main subject in grades 8 to 10 instead of a third foreign language. In the upper level, computer science can be taken as a 4-hour specialty subject. The sport of orienteering is taught both in the form of a working group and in the seminar subject.

Student exchanges and educational trips

Every year there are international exchanges with schools in France and England and traditional excursions: (in chronological order)

  • 5th grade introductory days to Tholey (2 nights)
  • Exchange of the 7th grade with a school in La Baule . This exchange can be deepened in higher grades.
  • 8th grade skiing leisure time to Altenmark in Austria
  • In grade 10, two classes (IT and / or NW) maintain an exchange with Casterton. The Spanish class has the opportunity to go to Spain . This international offer is intended to take into account the fact that the class community will then be dissolved in the context of the upper school.
  • Exchange of grades 10–12 with the 21st Public School in Tbilisi, Georgia
  • Course trip in grade 11
