The Johanneum grammar school in Homburg is a recognized, private, independent Catholic grammar school . The school has around 900 students (as of 2010).

history

The school was founded in 1963 by the Sacred Heart Missionaries (MSC) as a mission house and boarding school . A year later, an old-language grammar school was opened, which in 1968 was expanded to include a new-language section. At that time it was a purely high school for boys; girls have been admitted to school since 1981.

In 1994 several boarding school students from the St. Pirmin student residence in Dahn were accepted because the Dahner Haus was closed after the 1993/1994 school year. The students at the Otfried-von-Weißenburg-Gymnasium Dahn at that time were able to continue their schooling at the Johanneum in Homburg or at the Wirtschafts-Gymnasium in Saarbrücken . At the end of the 1990s the boarding school was closed as the origin of the school, but the grammar school was maintained. In 2005, the school was converted into a foundation due to a lack of young people with the order .

In June 2007 the Johanneum was the venue for the State Schoolchildren's Congress Saar 2007 (LSK-Saar'07) under the motto “If not now, then when? If not we who else? ”, Attended by students from all over the Saarland and the rest of Europe.

At the beginning of 2010 the school got into a scandal when cases of abuse against students by former Fathers became known.

management

From the school year 2008/2009 to August 2011, the school was headed by Eva Maria Wenzel-Staudt, who had previously set up and headed the first highly gifted school in Rhineland-Palatinate at the Heinrich-Heine-Gymnasium in Kaiserslautern . From the 2011/2012 school year to 2017/2018 the school was headed by Helmut Seiwert, who had been working at the school since 1985. Oliver Schales has been the headmaster since the 2018/19 school year.

Catholic orientation of the school

Despite the rating of the Catholic private school, children from both major Christian churches are taught at the school . In accordance with the school concept, great importance is attached to both mental and personal orientation and social character formation .

Additional offers

Since 2002 the Johanneum grammar school has been a "voluntary all-day school". Lunch is offered after class and in the so-called "Silentium", the students can do their homework under pedagogical supervision and experience a variety of support. There is also the opportunity to get involved in other offers (so-called AGs, working groups). For example in:
