The Otfried-von-Weißenburg-Gymnasium (OWG) is a regular school in the city of Dahn ( district of Südwestpfalz ). As a high school in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate it leads (grades 5-13) for nine years in high school or in six (5-10) for medium maturity .
Catchment area
The OWG is the only grammar school in the district of Südwestpfalz and mainly supplies its southeastern part, the Dahner Felsenland , but also the western part of the Südliche Weinstrasse district . Together with Realschule plus Dahn, it has been using a joint school building and school grounds, the Dahn school center, since 1976 .
Name and story
The grammar school was named after Otfrid von Weißenburg (* approx. 800; † after 870), whose name is sometimes also spelled with ie in literature . He was the first Old High German poet known by name and lived as a monk and scholar in the Weißenburg monastery , which was about 25 km southeast of Dahn, also on the Wieslauter river , in Wissembourg in Alsace .
In order to spare the students from the Dahn Rock Country the long way to school to Pirmasens or Landau , a Progymnasium was set up in Dahn in 1952 . In 1955 a new building was moved into, which had to be expanded in 1962. In 1958, the Progymnasium received the status of "Gymnasium" and also its current name. In the school center Dahn the OAG since 1976 is integrated.
The school motto "Orientation - Knowledge - Community" selected in 1999 is based on the initials of the namesake as well as the school name.
