Non-fiction leaderboard

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The best non-fiction book is a monthly list of ten non-fiction books in Germany . It is created in cooperation with Deutschlandfunk Kultur , ZDF and Die Zeit .

History and modalities

The publication of a joint non-fiction list was at the Frankfurt Book Fair announced in 2017 after the list of non-fiction books of the month of NDR and the Süddeutsche Zeitung, because of the controversy surrounding the recommendation of the criticized as a right-wing book Finis Germania by Rolf Peter Sieferle had been temporarily suspended. It was first published on November 1, 2017 and will be announced, presented and discussed at the same time in the Deutschlandfunk Kultur program , in the TV programs ZDF aspekte and 3sat Kulturzeit as well as in the weekly newspaper Die Zeit . It is also listed on the relevant website.

A jury of thirty critics recommends ten outstanding books each month, which they wish as many readers as possible. The non-fiction best-list appears eleven times a year, in August the jury takes a summer break for a month. Each of the three partners has six jury members, plus twelve other independent renowned literary critics. The jury members include Ijoma Mangold , the literary director of the time, René Aguigah , Julia Voss , Susanne Billig , Christoph Möllers , Stefan Brauburger , Heike Faller , Ralph Bollmann and Hilal Sezgin .

The jurors award fifteen, ten, six and three points to four books each. Points cannot be accumulated on a single book. Each title may appear on the leaderboard a maximum of three times. The publication date must not be more than a year ago, books by jury members are excluded. In contrast to the non-fiction books of the month, at least two jurors have to vote for a book so that it can be recommended.

reception

Patrick Bahners commented on the new best non-fiction book in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung as follows: Such a list is "nonsense" because there is no quality ranking for non-fiction books. Whether you prefer to find out more about the Thirty Years' War or the history of communism has only to do with the personal interests of the respective reader, nothing to do with the books themselves.

In 2018, a total of 83 different titles were included in the non-fiction leaderboard, of which 26 titles were awarded twice or more.
