Susanne Billig

Susanne Billig (born April 2, 1961 in Wetter an der Ruhr ) is a German novelist, screenplay writer and science journalist.

Live and act

Susanne Billig was born in the Ruhr area . After graduating from high school, she moved to London , where she worked as a telephone operator. Then she lived in a rural commune in Wales . She studied biology in Berlin , where she was involved in the squatter scene and in the women's movement. After graduating, she worked in a laboratory for genetic engineering and then for three years as an editor of the journal Gen-ethischer Informationsdienst , which deals critically with genetic engineering and reproductive medicine. A time as a freelance journalist followed. Among other things, she wrote for Die Tageszeitung , Der Tagesspiegel , Greenpeace magazine and the city magazine zitty . As a science journalist, she designed programs for the television program of Deutsche Welle , Deutschlandradio Kultur , Deutschlandfunk and WDR .

In 1987, together with Gabriele Kämper , Susanne Billig wrote a picture of the mood of young people in Kreuzberg about leisure behavior, unemployment, xenophobia, culture and life prospects , which was published by the STERN Gesellschaft der Bewutsamen Stadternerung Berlin mbH .

As a novelist, Susanne Billig worked with a focus on the crime novel genre. In her crime novels, Helen Marrow, a journalist with special skills as a detective, investigates. In 2000, Susanne Billig published the lesbian novel Ein greieriger Ort , which received a lot of critical attention. Andrea Roedig wrote in the Friday : “A greedy place is melancholy, but well written. The stories exert their own dark pull, draw into the action and they are dense [...] In the genre of lesbian novels, the book is an interesting variant, especially because it has other things in its sights than the usual love stories. As a screenwriter, she was involved in several feature films. The film Persecuted , which was made into a film based on her screenplay and directed by Angelina Maccarone , received the Golden Leopard at the Locarno International Film Festival in 2006 . Together with Angelina Maccarone, she wrote the script for the film Beauty Come, The Day is Half Past (2001), based on the novel by Tessa de Loo .

Susanne Billig has been orienting herself towards Buddhism since 1988. She is a member of the board of trustees of the Buddhist Academy Foundation , which was founded by Peter Gäng and others. The cross-tradition Buddhist community Die Kraniche goes back to the initiative of Susanne Billigs.

With Sylvia Wetzel , Susanne Billig presented a meditation program entitled Lighter life .
