The Sachsenrieder Bähnle is an almost 35 kilometer long cycle path , which essentially follows the route of the Kaufbeuren – Schongau railway, which was closed in 1972 , and bears the old popular name of this railway line.

history

The last passenger train on the branch line between Schongau and Kaufbeuren ran on September 30, 1972, in the years that followed, freight traffic was largely stopped with the exception of the Schongau – Altenstadt section. Most of the tracks were dismantled in the 1970s. In the Ostallgäu district , a cycle path was laid out in the 1990s on the abandoned route to the Sachsenrieder forest . In the 2000s, the Weilheim-Schongau district developed the idea of connecting Schongau to this existing cycle path in the Ostallgäu with the help of a railway cycle path.

After the construction was decided at the end of 2011 and EU funding was available, the cycle path was laid out in 2013 under the leadership of the local action group Auerbergland - Pfaffenwinkel and opened on September 29, 2013. The date was chosen on the occasion of the anniversary of the cessation of passenger traffic on September 30, 1972. The cycle path was blessed with a festive service at the former forest station and given its new purpose.

course

The Sachsenrieder Bähnle runs from Schongau station to the former forest station in Sachsenrieder Forst on hiking trails and mostly little-traveled local roads south of the old route, as many parts of the old route have disappeared in this area, and then continues on the route of the former train route to Kaufbeuren station. The route leads from Schongau via Altenstadt (with the Basilica of St. Michael ), Schwabbruck , Ingenried , past the eponymous village of Sachsenried, through the Sachsenried forest and via Osterzell , Kaltental , Stöttwang and Mauerstetten on the Swabian side to the train station in Kaufbeuren . From shortly before Osterzell to Kaufbeuren, the route is identical to the steam locomotive circuit . The connection to the railway network in Schongau and Kaufbeuren enables you to travel by train.

Experience character

The cycle path is interactive and informative. Information boards explain topics relating to the former Kaufbeuren – Schongau railway line with historical images. In addition to this information, cyclists can use a QR code on the boards to view original video excerpts from the last journey of a train on the route in 1972 on their smartphone . Cyclists are asked a railway question on the front of the board on interactive game boards and the correctness of the answer on the back can be checked with the help of a plug. Panoramic panoramas along the bike path give an impression of what it might have looked like on the railway line. Original railway equipment such as signal systems or a Köf II , a small locomotive, were set up along the cycle path .

In the Sachsenrieder forest and near Schwabbruck, two railway bridges have been preserved to this day. In addition, there are kilometer stones along the route that indicate the distance to the Kaufbeurer train station .

Resting places

Along the cycle path there are several rest areas with seating, bicycle parking facilities and information or play boards. At rest areas with a view of the mountains, the names of the visible Alpine peaks are explained in more detail on a panorama board.
