Saft el-Henna (also Saft el-Hinna, Saft el-Henne ; in ancient Egyptian Hut-nebes / Iat-nebes ) is the Arabic name of the ancient Egyptian capital of the 20th  Lower Egyptian district Per Sopdu .

The place was about seven kilometers southeast of today's Zagazig in the Asch-Sharqiyya governorate and was nicknamed the Gate of Heaven .

Local deities

The goddess " Herit - [...] - m-Iat-nebes " was at home in Saft el-Henna as the head of Iat-nebes . Iconographically , it appeared as a falcon-headed uraeus snake with an ostrich feather on its head.

In addition, Iat-nebes was one of the hometowns of the gods Schu , Sopdu and Atum .

Naos of the decades

The Pyramidion of the Naos of the Decades , which was recovered by Sonnini in Abukir in 1777 , originally stood in a sanctuary in Saft el-Henna. A naos of the goddess Tefnut designed with similar motifs has been lost to this day. He was in another room of the same sanctuary. In 1817 the Pyramidion des Naos of the Decades came to the Louvre in Paris .

The astrological inscriptions on the naos refer to the 36 decades of the year and provide valuable information about the Egyptian calendar . The ancient Egyptian place name was probably derived from the mythological idea that the Duat gate was located in Saft el-Henna , from which the sun god Re rises every morning:

Pyramidion of the Naos of the Decades ( Louvre )

“Iat-nebes, the gate of heaven. When Re opens, his face turns to the house of [...] ... [...]. 36  stars , the Baktiu Heaven, Earth and Duat are subject to their arrangement. They go up and down by the houses of Iat-nebes. [...] causing the flood water to come out ... As for the northeastern lake of Iat-nebes, that is the Duat of the Chatiu demons . The coming of the gods to heaven leads through this gate (from Iat-nebes) when they come out of the necropolis of the Duat. "
