history
The first French settlers settled in the area that comprised the central part of the Seigneurie Sault-Saint-Louis in 1725 . The first church was built in 1750. The parish of Saint-Constant was founded in 1845. The place name recalls the French officer Constant Le Marchand de Lignery (1663–1731). The extensive municipal area gradually shrank with the establishment of new municipalities (Saint-Michel 1854, Delson 1918, Saint-Mathieu 1919). With the opening of the Pont Honoré-Mercier in neighboring Kahnawake, accessibility from Montreal improved suddenly. The population increased significantly from the 1950s, so that Saint-Constant received city status in 1973.
