history

In 1676 the Jesuits built a mission station to convert the natives. For more than two and a half centuries, the area remained relatively sparsely populated. This changed in 1934 with the opening of the Pont Honoré-Mercier , which connects the neighboring Kahnawake with the Île de Montréal . In 1937 the municipality of Sainte-Catherine-d'Alexandrie-de-Laprairie was founded, by ceding areas of the municipality of Saint-Constant. The municipality received city status in 1973, when the name was shortened to Sainte-Catherine. This is derived from Kateri Tekakwitha , a canonized Iroquois . Sainte-Catherine experienced another significant development boost with the construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway in the 1950s. A lock was built north of the village to bypass the Lachine rapids, the Écluse de Sainte-Catherine .
