St-Julien-le-Pauvre (Paris)
Saint-Julien-le-Pauvre is one of the few Romanesque churches preserved in Paris . It is in the center of the city on the Rive Gauche opposite Notre-Dame .
Two strategically important Roman roads meet at the church : the Rue Saint-Jacques as part of the Cardo and the Rue Galande , the presumed start of the road to Burgundy . Saint-Julien was founded in the 6th century as a hospice with a chapel dedicated to Julianus ; it was mentioned by Gregory of Tours as early as 582 . At the time of the Merovingians it was used as a burial chapel.
During the Norman attack in 886, Saint-Julien was destroyed. King Henry I donated it in 1045 - still in ruins - to the cathedral chapter of Notre-Dame, which it passed on to Longpont Abbey around 1120 . The Longpont monks established a priory here and restored the building between 1170 and 1225: the apse dates from 1175, the central nave from the 13th century.
In the following years, Saint-Julien-le-Pauvre played an important role in the intellectual life of the Latin Quarter . This is where the rectors of the Sorbonne were elected, and the university's meetings were held here until the looting of 1524.
In 1651 the church was assigned to the Hôtel-Dieu . The church was in such bad shape at the time that it was partially demolished and rebuilt. During the French Revolution , the church was used as a salt store and was re-consecrated for worship in 1826. Masses according to the Greek-Catholic rite have been held here since 1889 . In 1901 a picture wall was built in to separate the choir from the ship.
On the side of the church in Square René-Viviani is the oldest tree in Paris, a locust tree planted in 1601.
