Sajama is a town in the Oruro department in the highlands of the South American Andean state of Bolivia .
Location in the vicinity
Sajama is a central place in the canton of Sajama , one of four cantons in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Curahuara de Carangas in the province of Sajama . The village of Sajama is located on the western edge of the Oruro department at an altitude of 4238 m ten kilometers from the Chilean border at the foot of the Sajama , at 6,542 m the highest mountain in Bolivia. The Río Sajama flows past Sajama , whose water comes from the Laguna Huaña Khota a few kilometers north of the Sajama , and which flows further southeast at Huachacalla into the Río Lauca and flows to the Salar de Coipasa .

Sajama is located at a distance of 254 kilometers by road west of Oruro , the capital of the department of the same name.
From Oruro, the unpaved road Ruta 31 leads west via La Joya to Curahuara de Carangas . Due to the historical population development, the region has a high proportion of Aymara population, in the municipality of Curahuara 83.7 percent of the population speak the Aymara language .
