Zacharias Topelius
Zacharias Topelius [ sakaˈriːas tɔˈpeːlɪʊs ] (also Zachris Topelius or Z. Topelius , born January 14, 1818 at Kuddnäs Gård near Nykarleby ; † March 12, 1898 in Björkudden , Sibbo ) was a Finnish-Swedish writer , poet , journalist , historian and rector of the university Helsinki .
Life
After taking private lessons from Johan Ludvig Runeberg, Topelius became a student in Helsinki , received his doctorate in 1840 and edited the Helsingfors Tidningar from 1842 to 1860 , in which he published his first poems and short stories. He also wrote the libretto for the first Finnish opera Kung Karls Jakt (1852) by Fredrik Pacius .
In 1852 he became lecturer of history at the grammar school in Wasa , in 1854 associate professor of Finnish history at the University of Helsinki , 1863 full professor , 1876 professor of general history, from the position he resigned in 1878 with the title Council of State.
Zacharias is his baptismal name, and this and the abbreviation Z. were often used as the author's name on his works. However, he himself mostly used the abbreviation or the form Zachris (even on official occasions) . The form Sakari was also used earlier in Finnish in texts about Topelius.
The Topeliusweg was named after him in Berlin-Kladow in 1958.
