history
The Sakawa Basin shows rare fossils in excavations and evidence of human settlement more than 10,000 years ago, for example through ruins in the Fudoga Iwaya cave . Due to the excavation of the Kamatata site, it is assumed that rice cultivation began in the Yayoi period , which is still predominantly agricultural today . During the Edo period, Sakawa flourished as the castle town of the Tosa clan . With the enforcement of the communal system, the village of Sagawa became a municipality in 1889 and a city in 1900, into which other surrounding villages were incorporated between 1954 and 1958.
Town twinning
Sakawa maintains since 1988 a community partnership with Kitami in Hokkaido , .
