Salicyl alcohol (saligenin) is a chemical compound that occurs naturally in some plants and insects . It arises from the hydrolysis of salicin , a β-glucoside of salicylic alcohol. Salicyl alcohol belongs to the group of hydroxybenzyl alcohols , which is derived from both benzyl alcohol and phenol .
