Salim S. Abdool Karim

Salim Safurdeen Abdool Karim (born July 29, 1960 in Durban , South Africa ) is a South African epidemiologist and specialist in infectious diseases . It is internationally recognized.

Life

In 1983 Karim obtained an MBBCH from the University of Natal Medical School ( University of Natal ) in Durban , and in 1988 an MS from Columbia University , New York. 1991 Karim earned a PhD from the College of Medicine, South Africa and two further PhDs from the University of Natal, Durban in 1992 and 1999. In 2014 he was awarded the DSc (Med.) ( Honoris causa ) from the University of Cape Town .

He is married to Quarraisha Abdool Karim, with whom he previously worked in research.

Karim is Director of the Center for the AIDS Program of Research in South Africa (CAPRISA), Vice Rector (Research) of the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban , South Africa, and Professor of Clinical Epidemiology at the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University .

He is also an associate professor of medicine at Cornell University's Weill Medical College , an associate member of the Ragon Institute of Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University .

Karim was the chairman of the UNAIDS Scientific Expert Panel. He is a consultant to Lancet Global Health, Lancet HIV and The New England Journal of Medicine .

In CAPRISA he worked on numerous publications, especially on HIV / AIDS research. Karim's contributions to microbiocides over 20 years resulted in the CAPRISA-004 tenofovir gel test, which showed that antiretroviral drugs can prevent sexually transmitted HIV infections and herpes simplex virus 2 in women . However, these results did not hold up. His clinical research on the treatment of patients with TB- HIV co-infections has largely determined the international guidelines .

Karim is co-owner of patents in the field of HIV vaccines .
