Salvatore Joseph Cordileone (born June 5, 1956 in San Diego , California ) has been the Roman Catholic Archbishop of San Francisco since 2012 .

After graduating from Crawford High School , Cordileone, whose grandparents immigrated to the United States from Sicily , studied philosophy and Catholic theology at San Diego State University and the University of San Diego . He then studied from 1978 at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome . On July 9, 1982, Cordileone received the sacrament of ordination for the diocese of San Diego . From 1985 to 1989 he studied canon law at the Gregorian University. He then was secretary to the Coadjutor Bishop of San Diego Robert Henry Brom and parish priest in Calexico . From 1995 to 2002 Cordileone was assistant at the Apostolic Signature in Rome. In 1999 Pope John Paul II awarded him the title of Chaplain to His Holiness ( Monsignor ).

On July 5, 2002, John Paul II appointed him Titular Bishop of Natchesium and Auxiliary Bishop in San Diego. He was ordained episcopal on August 21 of that year by the Bishop of San Diego, Robert Henry Brom. Co- consecrators were the Bishop of La Crosse , Raymond Leo Burke , and Auxiliary Bishop Gilbert Espinosa Chávez of San Diego.

Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Bishop of Oakland on March 23, 2009 ; the inauguration took place on May 5th of the same year. He was appointed Archbishop of San Francisco on July 27, 2012 and was introduced to the office on October 4 of the same year. In the United States Bishops' Conference , Cordileone has been the designated chairman of the Laity, Family, and Youth Committee since November 2018.

In 2008, during his time as auxiliary bishop, he supported Proposition 8 , which aimed to state that only heterosexual marriages were recognized by the state. The referendum, in which a majority of the voters voted for the position of the initiators, was declared unconstitutional in 2010.
