Samuel Gottlieb Lange

Samuel Gottlieb Lange (born April 5, 1767 in Ohra near Danzig ; † June 15, 1823 in Rostock ) was a German Evangelical Lutheran theologian, preacher and professor of theology at the University of Rostock.

Life

Samuel Gottlieb Lange was the son of the preacher Gottlieb Lange († 1802), later first deacon at the Danzig Trinity Church . After attending grammar school in Danzig, he studied theology, philology, philosophy and history for three years in Jena and then returned to his hometown. For health reasons, he returned to Jena in 1795, where he completed his habilitation and gave lectures on theology and philosophy as a private lecturer. In the same year he became an adjunct at the philosophical faculty, in 1796 associate professor of philosophy and in 1798 associate professor of theology.

In 1798 he followed the call of a full professor of Old Testament theology at the University of Rostock . In addition, he was preacher at the local hospital church to the Holy Spirit as the successor of Joachim Heinrich Pries the Elder J. (1747-1796). On May 10, 1799 he was promoted to Dr. theol. PhD. He was dean of the theological faculty several times and rector of the university in 1820/21. He was also a member of the Rostock Masonic Lodge Temple of Truth. For a long time he remained unmarried, he died after a serious illness at the age of 57.
