The San Benito AVA , recognized since October 5, 1987, is a wine-growing region in the US state of California . The area is located in the western part of the administrative area of San Benito County and is part of the parent Central Coast AVA . The area is reached by the cooling mists and sea breezes of the Pacific via an opening between the Gabilan Range and the Santa Lucia Mountains . The area was once a major supplier of grapes of the winery Almaden Vineyards before that in 1987 the conglomerate Constellation Brands was acquired.
