San Felipe is a city in the middle of Chile . It is located in the Región de Valparaíso . It has 76,844 inhabitants (as of 2017).

Geography and climate

The city is located about 80 kilometers north of Santiago de Chile on the Río Aconcagua . The expanded name of the city is San Felipe de Aconcagua . About 160 kilometers to the east is the highest mountain in South America, the Aconcagua . The city center is bordered by the four major streets Chacabuco , Maipu , O'Higgins and Yungai . Three of the four streets are regularly maintained so that they are inviting for a walk.

There is a Mediterranean climate.

history

The city was founded on August 4, 1740 by Governor José Antonio Manso de Velasco . In 1747 the University of San Felipe was founded. The later Chilean President José Joaquín Pérez Mascayano studied law at this university. The valley of the Río Aconcagua with the Battle of Chacabuco in 1817 plays a major role in the Chilean struggle for independence.

Attractions

In San Felipe there is a mix of colonial architecture and modern buildings. The Church of St. Anthony of Padua from Almendral was designed by Alexandre Gustave Eiffel .

The city is located in the fertile valley of the Río Aconcagua in a wonderful landscape that is ideal for excursions.

To the southwest of San Felipe lies the 80 km² La Campana National Park . The park in the coastal mountains is criss-crossed by palm forests.

economy

Tourism plays a very important role for the city due to the natural beauty of the landscape. Around the city there are large agricultural growing areas with citrus fruits and vegetables, as well as viticulture .

In the vicinity of the city there are hydropower plants that supply the industry with electricity. The nearby town of Llay Llay is home to large limestone deposits that are used by the chemical and cement industries.

A railway line connects San Felipe with Valparaíso, 130 km southwest . San Felipe is connected to Santiago de Chile by rail and road. In addition, a trunk road runs from San Felipe across the Andes to Mendoza in Argentina , making the city an important trading center for trade between Chile and Argentina.
