San José Alto is a town in the La Paz department in the highlands of the South American Andean state of Bolivia .
Location in the vicinity
San José Alto is the largest municipality in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Papel Pampa in the province of Gualberto Villarroel . San José Alto is located at an altitude of 3738 m in an extensive hill country directly west of the north-south oriented ridge Serranía de Huayllamarca , which rises here to over 4,500 m.

San José Alto is located on the Bolivian Altiplano between the Andes mountain ranges of the Cordillera Occidental in the west and the Cordillera Central in the east.
The mean annual precipitation is about 330 mm and falls 80 percent in the months of December to March (see Huayllamarca climate diagram). The annual average temperature is just under +8 ° C, the monthly average values fluctuate between +4 ° C in June / July and around +10 ° C from November to March.
Transport network
San José Alto is 230 kilometers by road south of La Paz , the capital of the department of the same name.
From La Paz, the paved highway Ruta 2 leads to El Alto , from there Ruta 1 in a southerly direction as an asphalt road to Patacamaya and reaches Panduro after a total of 170 kilometers . From there, an unpaved road leads sixteen kilometers to the southwest to Eucaliptus , after another 36 kilometers it reaches the central town of Papel Pampa and continues for another eight kilometers in a north-easterly direction to San José Alto .

Due to the historical population development, the region has a high proportion of Aymara population, in the municipality of Papel Pampa 94.5 percent of the population speak the Aymara language .
