history

Finds of an epigram indicate a settlement in Roman times. In the 13th century, the castle of San Pancrazio (no longer present) was under the control of the monks of the Badia Agnano abbey and the Ubertini from Arezzo, who were later replaced by the Tarlati. In the conflict between Ghibellines and Guelphs , the abbot Don Basilio di Santa Maria d'Agnano and other places gave San Pancrazio to the Republic of Florence on October 28, 1340. After the defeat of Arezzo by the Republic of Florence in 1384, the city walls were gradually torn down. In 1551 the place had 159 inhabitants, in 1745 there were 281 and in 1833 the place had 359 inhabitants. On June 29, 1944, Hermann Göring's Parachute Panzer Division 1 carried out the Civitella massacre in Val di Chiana, Cornia and San Pancrazio , in which at least 55 people were murdered in the cellars of Palazzo Podestarile in San Pancrazio. The memorial stone for those murdered in San Pancrazio contains 79 people.
