The sand dune flora near Seeheim is an extensive natural monument in the district of Seeheim , municipality of Seeheim-Jugenheim in the district of Darmstadt-Dieburg in southern Hesse. It was placed under nature protection by ordinance of March 31, 1950, published on April 30, 1950 .

location

The forest area "Sanddünenflora bei Seeheim" lies in the natural area of the Hessian Rhine Plain , Pfungstadt-Griesheimer Sand. The natural monument is located northwest of Jugenheim on both sides of the "Jugenheimer Viehtrieb" and covers an area of 11.877 hectares. In the north it is bounded by the "Seeheimer Viehweg", on the southern tip of the Landbach, in the northeast by the state road 3103. In the west, a part of the nature reserve " Limestone pine forest near Bickenbach, Pfungstadt and Seeheim-Jugenheim " has bordered since 1996 .

Description, flora and fauna

The protected area is a light pine forest on post-glacial calcareous sands, which are partly flat, partly blown to form dunes. There are thick layers of older river sands underground. The sandy areas are (or were) populated by rare plants such as wintergreen species, brown-red stendrums , red forest birds , hairy awl grass and great anemones . In the meantime, they are likely to have largely disappeared due to the increasing shade from beeches and bushes in the undergrowth.

The area is home to numerous butterflies such as the Russian bear , milkweed hawk and swan . Beetles are also rich in species, including dune tiger beetles , walkers , shotguns and common asparagus beetles . Many species of spider live on the ground or in the plants, such as cunning spiders and crevasse spiders . Eighteen species of snail have been identified, including the white heather snail , the common heather snail and the cylinder diaper snail as species on the Red List .

Impairments

At the edges and along the path, foreign ruderal plants penetrate the protected area. In the early 1980s, a natural gas pipeline was laid through the middle of the natural monument without the nature conservation authorities being involved. Another gas route followed in 1986, which also resulted in a change in the routing. The exposed raw sand was then sown with a standard grass and clover mixture on an area of 275 × 30 meters.
