The Sandy Creek is a 41 miles long left tributary of the Tuscarawas River in the northeastern US state of Ohio .

It drains an area of 1,305 square kilometers and is part of the river system of the Mississippi River . It drains into the Gulf of Mexico via the Tuscarawas River , Muskingum River , Ohio River and Mississippi River .

The Sandy Creek rises 4 km northeast of the village of Hanoverton in western Columbiana County at an altitude of 403 m. It flows generally in a south-westerly direction through the counties Columbiana, Carroll , Tuscarawas and Stark and reaches 2 km northeast of Bolivar the confluence with the Tuscarawas River at 270 m height. Sandy Creek's tributaries include the Still Fork Sandy River , Little Sandy Creek, and Nimishillen Creek . According to the Geographic Names Information System , the river was also referred to as Big Sandy River, Elks Eye Creek, Lamanshicolas, and similar spellings.

The Bolivar Dam was built by the United States Army Corps of Engineers just before the mouth of Sandy Creek to protect against flooding.
