Sunder, Gopal and Radha have been friends since childhood. Gopal and Radha are in love, only Sunder doesn't seem to recognize this, because Sunder is also secretly in love with Radha. He visits his friend and tells him about his love for Radha. Gopal does not want to destroy the friendship and is silent.
Radha's parents are not very enthusiastic about Sunder because he makes his living as a musician, so he goes to the military in Kashmir . During an operation it crashes and remains lost. His friend Gopal thinks he is dead and rebuilds a relationship with Radha. After the two are already thinking about getting married, Sunder suddenly appears. Gopal sacrifices his great love again and Radha marries Sunder.
The young couple go on a honeymoon in Europe and seem happy together. Radha is determined to stay true to her husband and forget about Gopal. But soon the marriage is in tatters when Sunder discovers an anonymous love letter to Radha. Sunder is struck by lightning. He bullies Radha who is supposed to reveal the name of the suitor in order to kill him. But she remains stubborn.
Ultimately, Gopal Sunder confesses that he is the secret admirer of Radha and then commits suicide. In grief, Radha and Sunder are reunited.

The film songs were sung by Mukesh , Mahendra Kapoor , Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammed Rafi , the lyrics are by Shailendra and Hasrat Jaipuri.
Sangam is Kapoor's first color film. It is one of the first Indian films to use European locations as exotic backgrounds (here: Switzerland and Paris).
