Sani Bečirovič (born May 19, 1981 in Maribor , Yugoslavia ) is a Slovenian basketball player who is 1.96 m tall and plays the position of shooting guard .

Career

Sani Bečirovič began his professional career at KK Bistrica, a Slovenian club where he had already played in the youth departments. In 1996 he moved to Maribor Ovni, where he was under contract for one year. In 1997, Bečirovič moved to KK Pivovarna Laško , where he stayed for the next two seasons. In 1999, the player signed a contract with the Ljubljana- based Slovenian top club Olimpija Ljubljana . With Union Olimpija Bečirovič was once Slovenian champion and won the national cup competition twice. In the summer of 2001 Bečirović finally moved abroad after a brief interlude at KK Krka Novo mesto (2003/2004). His first stop was Italy , where he played with Virtus Bologna , Varese and Fortitudo Bologna . In 2002 Bečirovič was able to win his first title outside of Slovenia with the Italian Cup . The 2002/2003 season was a low point, when he was out for a long time after a serious injury and lost his place in the club and the national team. At the end of that season he was nevertheless selected in the NBA Drafts in 46th place by the Denver Nuggets . Between 2006 and 2008 the Slovenian played for the Greek top club Panathinaikos Athens , where he succeeded his compatriot Jaka Lakovič and won the triple in his first season .

Sani Bečirovič is an integral part of the Slovenian national team and also played a leading role in all of Slovenia’s youth teams . For the first time he was able to draw attention to himself in 1998 at the U18 European Championship, when he was voted MVP of the tournament with 28.1 points and 3.8 assists per game . In 2005 he finished sixth with his team at the European Championships in Serbia .

  • Bečirovič's father, Memi Bečirović , last coached the Slovenian first division club Union Olimpija . There was a father-son duel in the 2006/2007 season when Sani and Panathinaikos faced the club coached by his father as part of the preliminary round of the ULEB Euroleague . Both games could be won by Sani's team.
